Amazing…..not for the wind, but for all the windsurfers that were out. Nine. Nine windsurfers and one kite in the classic Long Pond nuking schlogging conditions. The weather was beautiful, the sunshine brilliant in the mid morning.
Isaac started things off with an early Groupme message, and then in the hour or so after that folks began hitting. the water at Long Pond. Sail sizes ranged from 5.2-6.9. Isaac, Ted, Art, Joe, Scott, Gary, Rich, Keith, and Doug (me) joined by Mark R. in his new Tesla S, and some sized kite….but who cares!!! He arrived to kiteboard in a TESLA!!!
It was great to finally get on the water after too long a break in this crazy windless year. Isaac sent me a pic of some torn up “haven’t been on the water in a while” hands, and any aches and pains were well earned as he was pumping things up on his 5.9 when I arrived. The wind trended down most of the morning, but some sustained wagers came through and sent everybody on the water, or into the water in unexpected catapults (myself included). Rich Hartway from out west in Medina was really holding his own for a windsurfer with only two years experience. He was on the water for a long time on his 5.5 but his determination shows in his ride back and forth with no falls. Scott was blazing with the biggest sail on the water, his 6.9 and sleek Fanatic Ray. Magic Joe on a magic 5.8, Isaac B. finally getting a session worth remembering, Ted ripping (and trying out a new drone), Art…he’s just automatic on his 5.2. Gary getting some good rides, and Keith with the newest gear on the water in the form of his beautiful 5.9 North Hero’s (and maybe the oldest board). Me, I had things dialed in on my 6.5 Ezzy Lion and go to 116 Screamer. I was making better jibes on port which is usually my weakest side.
Mark R. got some time kiting on the pond on a pretty small kite using his launch anchors in the corner. Scott and I even got a trusting test drive on his Tesla S. while he rigged a bigger kite. What an incredible automobile. Driving one is to believe….It makes a Toyota Prius look like an old heavy Obrien windsurfer form the 80’s.
I got a ton of great shots on the day of the group and individuals. Here’s a few samples while I whittle the bulk of em down.

That was a fun session even though it was typical Long Pond with shifts and holes. I first went out on my 110 Fanatic Cross and a 5.7 and after sailing into a couple holes was determined not to do that all day. So I rigged the big sail, my Ezzy Wave 6.9 and played with the outhaul a few times as conditions dictated. But I was really anticipating a quick falling off of wind strengths which had been predicted but the winds held up longer and like Teddy predicted my arms were longer by the days end (if only I could figure out how to get taller). BTW at one point I even helped a fisherman catch a fish. He was in his car watching his line out in the water. I came in to switch to my big sail and realized I had his line wrapped around my ankle, he came out apologizing and after I got untangled he pulled in the FISH!!!
But really I’m still jazzed by the TESLA test drive!!! I mean who does that! Here my 2017 Tesla is only a week and a half old but why don’t you guys take it for a test drive! Huh? Your kidding? Your not? Let’s go Doug!!! Mark: “As you walk to the car with the keys in your pocket the door handles will pop out to greet you, just hop in touch the brake and your good to go!” And by the way the entire roof is translucent, but from the outside it looks like a normal roof! AND there is tons of power at the throttle…tons! That was too cool Mark. Thanks.
