Well thought I’d check in with my favorite blog with a fresh post…What makes a session the best ever? I’m not sure, but for me it’s a whole host of elements rolled into one. It’s windsurfing when you shouldn’t be windsurfing. Like in winter! But without the suffering, i.e. frostbite etc. And then there is the camaraderie, frankly it’s always about the camaraderie. Then there is the satisfaction of fulfilling a successful plan, like when you load up the night before because it’s suppose to blow early. Of course you can’t forget the after party; the celebration of all the above and the discovery of a new brewery just a few minutes from the WATER! WHAT?
It’s December 27th and there is no snow on the flippin ground. Santa had to put wheels on the sleight and thankfully all the gifts arrived safely. Keaton has been in the basement for two days straight with his Occulus VR goggles. He comes up bleary eyed with an imprint of goggles tattooed to his face for food and drink every few hours! The stress of the holidays is almost over and what a better way to de-stress than to go sailing!
The weatherman has forcasted mild temperatures and my wetsuit is up to the challenge of the forecasted weather. Southerly winds and upper forties! Corey texted me the night before letting me know he thought conditions would be suitable for an early Seneca session. I posted back…”OK”, succinct but affirmative in a somewhat noncommital way. In other words, if I can get my lazy butt up that early I’ll see you there!
The next morning I roll out of bed, I check my phone, Corey has been waiting for the sun to come up and is headed out on a 6.5! Fearing I’ve already missed it I throw myself together (much harder than you think) and rush out the door. Arriving at Seneca 45 minutes later the park is quiet, not a kite in sight and no sign of Corey. I turn into the park and go pass the ticket booth. Over the water something catches my eye. It’s a huge bald eagle floating above the shoreline and heading in the same direction. Not a bad sign.
At the launch Corey is there taking a break and the wind is blowing strong. A six five should be plenty he tells me. And I go into setup mode, totally focus, get it done and get to the water. We both head out and holy shit am I powered up! For the next twenty minutes I concentrate on making clean jibes and don’t venture to far out cause I’m overpowered. But it ticks down a tad and we both power farther out and get dialed in for an awesome December session. In fact I can’t believe how comfortable the temperatures are and I sheet in, close the gap and load up the fin screaming across the water.
Corey has had three session and me two. The sky looks foreboding with rain clouds looming in the west so we call it a day. But do we? Corey tells me he has to go to Warhorse Brewery to pick up custom brewed soda for the kids and would I like to tag along. Gee, I like soda but do they brew beer too? Of course! Ten minutes down the road we pull into Warhorse Brewery and Three Heads Winery. From the outside it looks like a brewery you might expect at Disney Springs in Orlando Florida! It’s stunning. We both order a flight of custom beers. Each flight has five samples and costs ten dollars. I start at the left and begin tasting. Wow this is good, it’s refreshing tasty. On to the next, wow this is almost as good as The Other Half NEIPA. The next…this is great! Each beer better and better. Then the bar starts filling up with beautiful women who apparently LIKE beer! Not sure what this is about but time to call it a day before I have to call UBER for a ride. Corey runs some math for me and I decide to buy a Growler of Scotch Ale to bring home to the misses and we head off into the intermittent rain for the ride home after the best windsurfing session ever!

It is amazing how heavy a taster glass feels after hours on the water. Great beer, awesome session. Thanks Scott.
