I gambled this weekend on a campsite on the end of the beach loop at Southwick Beach State Park and cashed out a jackpot session. At a 1:00 early check-in, the clattering trees and blaring surf noise belied the low-teens forecast. The typical anticipation associated with that first glance of the lake went to that “oh my” you get when you see your best-girl decked out for date night. Ditching thoughts of setting up camp, I stumbled to the sunny beach to meter W-WNW mid to high-teens bumping low 20’s with friendly waves breaking way out creating a huge swash zone on the inside. Evidently the sand lost from last year’s high water erosion debacle has returned to Southwick temporarily creating shallow water even farther out than is typical there. No swimmers allowed me to cruise the inside flats and do hit and runs on the break for the entire length of the park and beyond with a 12M trimmed a bit. Incredibly, no other kiters arrived on scene and I was whipped and winding lines by 5:00, staring at the slowly calming lake while talking to myself about what just happened. Food and Guinness at the campfire augmented my dumb luck session buzz and yet another spectacular Southwick sunset was the final payoff.

Magazine quality write-up in the digital age Bob. Thanks for this. Stellar photo.
Keep em coming when you have the time. If I can’t wake up to wind every day, at least I can rely on my friends to give me something to look forward to that is wind related.

Sometimes it good to get lucky! But was it luck? You had your gear and you were there! Nice!

Friday late morning 10:30to 2:00 may just be one of those elusive Southwick days where a SSW drops into the middle part of the lake. WindyTY never has it going full SW so Henderson Harbor is out. Seneca is peaking at 12 to 14. Air should be in the 50’s and water 58 with full on sun for us old folks. Sure would like to sail Southwick with a sand beach. last time was 3 years ago with Mike Moran about this time of year and it was a rig every sail festival.
