Duotone delivers novel wind-driven fun and accessibility to new venues with their new Foil Wing. Thanks to Green Hat, (best kite shop in the East), I recently unpacked one of the new 5m Duotone Foil Wings and immediately noticed the great build that is typical of Duotone products. First session, I found the Foil Wing simple to rig and easy to carry around and safely secure on the beach. As advertised, handling was very intuitive and after 20 minutes of ground handling in ankle deep water, I grabbed a big SUP and went from kneeling to standing on the very first run on flat water in 14 mph. Duotone’s unique boom and batten-stiffened wing deliver very accurate feedback and enable quick and infinite adjustment of the wing’s position and power. It’s amazing how fast you can forget about the wing and just concentrate on foot position and body posture. Without a harness or mast, you grab the wind with your hands and transmit it through your entire body to the board… it’s definitely a brand new ride sensation. The only down-side of the Foil Wing is that it will definitely add to my already hopeless water-sport addiction…great stuff from Duotone.

Junky that you are, it’s a good thing you aren’t around anything addictive! Ooops!!
Hey, that makes me wonder if naloxone would work for wind addiction? 😉

Actually, it would be kind of interesting to understand what systems in the brain make windsports so addicting…

Wow Bob! What a waterman you are. Thanks for the review on this wing. Scott, Gary and I were talking about this a few weeks back, and the rigid boom/tube concept of the Duotone wing makes the most sense to us, at least coming from the rigid framed wing world that we do in winter. Were you able to get enough apparent wind to steer to wind? The knock on the Kitewing style wings on water is that you can’t get enough speed going across/through the wind to generate lift for the wing to keep itself aloft.
I’ve been leery of what looks to me like instability of the wings as wind and board speed increases. The death wobble in the world of skateboarding if you will. Not as big a deal though when you fall on water.
How long till you try it on a foil?
and…….PICTURES PLEASE!
See ya out there,
Doug

Looks like a cool toy. Would love to see it in action. Post on Groupme next time you take it out! I’ve seen videos and would love to see it in action. I’ve heard Bay Creek in Roch. is getting a demo wing, a Naish I think.

Hey Doug…yet another water sport that I suck at, but totally enjoy. Due to the light weight to power ratio, the 5m Foil Wing stays aloft well on the downwind turn if I use to boom leverage to rotate the nose of wing into the wind over my head instead of trying a duck gybe by rotating the nose towards the water and clew overhead. Been yanked on every duck gybe so far, but is should work if on foil with speed in light wind. Just got a high volume multipurpose SUP/Surf/Foil board to learn some flat water (no foil) board skills while getting enough air time with the Foil Wing to make flying it automatic and mindless before adding a foil underneath the board. The only major problem I’ve had is getting it away from the kids. Every kid wants wings to fly, and the foil wing gives them some sense of that in an accessible way. I’ve spent significant time dual-flying it in ankle deep water with my 8 year old granddaughter…we’re ready for a (me kneeling) dual-down-winder on the SUP soon…really great family fun that also makes major points with the wife. The dealer who sold it to me says his demos are being mobbed at the beach by kids and beachgoers that you would typically never expect to try to windsurf or kite. He anticipates the wing will introduce a lot more people to our various board based watersports….Foil Wings may prove to be a gateway drug for creating new wind addicts…yikes!
