Windier weather is definitely on it’s way! Anyone have plans to head out for some sailing this holiday weekend?

Doug, adding pictures is REALLY frustrating. I’ve tried twice now, and the forum keeps eating my post. 🙁

Anyway, here’s a video from today. Maybe the posts with the pictures will magically appear later!

I got out last Saturday at Aurora (Long Point SP) and had a good 5.5 day. Looks like Sunday was good at Geneva, but alas I had to help my folks with fall yard chores (87 and 93, so I’m needed for any muscle chores).

Hoping for something good this weekend, but today is really rainy. Maybe tomorrow (10/17), but the wind direction mainly favors the Big O…not sure how much I want to do a 2-hour one-way commute. Mon and Tues look better for the Finger Lakes…so I’m trying to get work done on the weekend.

What are the Rochester-based sailors thinking about tomorrow?

Yeah, life always gets in the way. Pretty awesome that you can help out your parents; mine are >5 hours away, not much I can reasonably do these days.

My normal spot on Ontario is Durand Eastman which needs a bit of N in the wind to not be too gusty; should try something further east sometime!

I’ve got a friend interested in trying things out; I’ll be at the north end of Canandaigua again tomorrow morning.  It’ll be a bit gusty with the straight W wind but at least the waves will be manageable for a beginner… I’m hoping there’s enough wind to break out the GPS, still my favorite sail by a long shot!

      Hey Mark,

Sorry about the photo posting issue.  I had not checked in on the forum in a bit with things being busy for me.  I just did a bunch of behind the scenes updating that may solve your issue.  A couple were significant.  I have not tried to replicate what might be happening for you however.

Also, I just read your message about being added to Groupme chat app about when where we are sailing.  I will be adding you soon so keep an I out for htat on your cell.

        Awesome, thanks Doug!

Was out on Canandaigua again today with the 9.5. It felt like the wind was going from 5 knots up to 20+ in the gusts coming out of the hills from the west. I had been using the 150L Go with the footstraps in the intermediate position, and have recently been trying to get used to them in the outboard position for better control.

I had been having a heck of a time getting comfortable with my feet so far out; hard to get into the straps without spraying myself in the face and stopping because my heels were dragging in the water, and then once in (assuming I didn’t either stall out and end up heading straight upwind or get launched into a catapult…), it felt really uncomfortable and difficult to get into a balanced sailing position.

Today was a real turning point; it turns out that I had been putting the mast foot too far forward, even with the massive sail; it felt fine before, but I think the only reason I was able to sail that way was because the setup was so… improper! It felt much happier and more balanced with the mast foot about 1/3rd of the way from the back of the mast track instead of near the front, easier to sheet in to put the power on, more balanced while I shifted my weight into the harness to move my feet into the straps, and a nice comfortable sailing position while cruising along just under 20 knots.

My goal now is to break the 20 knot barrier with that sail; I’ve been consistently around 18-19 knots per the phone GPS. Maybe I should also invest in a better tracking device for more accurate speed measurements too!

Test post to see if I can post a picture without editing it into the post after the fact!

Still Fall! Finger Lakes look like they’ll be rocking tomorrow morning, and pretty awesome all afternoon over in eastern Erie. Not sure about LP; probably not enough W until after sun-down…
