The forecast called for an early day on Wednesday at Seneca Lake. Much like the one we had a couple weeks ago. But arriving at Seneca early I was disappointed to find the the wind had already come off its peak.
The lone sailor, Mark, was rigging a 12m kite and Eric P. and I started rigging 6.3’s on large boards. By the time we got our sails rigged the winds ramped up. I was torn between sailing or rigging down. We both decided to give it a try and after one pass, I came in to rig down.
Joe, and Dave from Ithaca, arrived and we all headed out on 5.3 to 4.7 sails. I stuck with my Fanatic Cross but put a small fin on it and we all sailed in overpowered conditions with great swell and nice ramps. I’m pretty sure I could have rigged a 4.2 but stuck with my setup. I hit more jumps than any other session the year. Definitely some of my biggest air. Eric picked a tough day for his Seneca lake initiation and although we did our best to advise him, he had a tough day with a couple long walks. Andy was the only kiter to sail at the visitor center and he mostly stuck to his signature big air jumps in the slick by the hotel. Unbelievably impressive air, twenty to thirty foot jumps? You can’t say wow enough times, so impressed by his talent!
The winds shifted to the south and the lightened up at the visitor’s center. Radar showed rain in Rochester headed our way so we debated about whether to call it a day but then Keith showed up and we all headed over to the park for one last session. The rationale was that the water and air were reasonably warm and the wind was still blowing hard on the far side.
Arriving at the park Keith was rigging a 5.3 and I did likewise. Joe rigged a 4.7. We all headed out and killed a good solid hour of carving jibes in swell and hitting ramps. Joe was banking turns turns off wave faces and seemingly enjoying his least favorite Seneca launch site. It was a great fall day at Seneca the and the hot shower at the park restroom didn’t hurt either!

Fantastic! I was disappointed that my schedule would not allow me to sail with you guys at Seneca that day, but I was stoked to hear from several guys who said it was a great session. We had hoped that the WSW session would kick in near sunset in the Buffalo area, but it didn’t really pan out that day. Tuesday has strong potential for Seneca and my schedule is free, so fingers crossed. Been a truly incredible wind-year. More wind than any year I have recorded.
