ParticipantDo any of you guys ride at Hamlin Beach? It looks really good on Google Earth for WNW or ENE, but I’ve never been there. What’s it like?

ParticipantI had a little adventure at Hamlin State Park one evening after work in May, I posted about this on the Rochester Windsports GroupMe on the day.
It’s a really beautiful place! I was the only person there (or so I thought). The wind had dropped quite a bit by the time i had found a good launch point and rigged, but I decided to give it a go anyway. Slogged out, tuned around and bobbed back…to find a State Trooper waiting for me!
Apparently one needs a permit to surf at Hamlin, windsurfing seems to be classified as surfing according to the State Trooper, and kiting is not allowed at all. Permits can be obtained from the park office on weekdays during business hours. It is not clear if permits are valid for the day or a season, but permits are not issued/valid during the swimming season which is between Memorial and Labor day.
I was let off “this time”, personally I’ll steer clear of the place. If you are keen it may be worth verifying the rules with the park office, and keeping a signed transcript of the conversation together with a valid permit in a watertight pouch in you wetsuit when you sail there;)

ParticipantCompare that to what they do for us at Seneca Park! Sailors paradise! Or Durand Beach where they rake the sandy launch for us! Thanks for checking it out. We need to check out East Bay sometime and see if it still accessible after last years erosion problem. Great in a west wind.

KeymasterHey Eric.
East Bay (or EBay) is immediately East of Chimney Bluffs. Here is the link to the very basic launch info on that page of the website.
In the pic on that page, you can see the dead end road. That pic is about 5 years old. Over the time we have been sailing there we have witnessed them moving the guard rail back as the lake has eaten the shoreline away. E Bay is likely the best West wind option we have close to Rochester. Webster Park was rendered unassailable last year as a result of the large boulders placed to combat erosion. Webster Park had always been the pinnacle of Rochester area big win and wave sailing. Montana Beach works well for the kites in a West wind, and with a big hike to windward for windsurfers. It is really not preferred as a West wind launch for windsurfing though.

KeymasterHere is an E Bay vid from back in 2009. You’ll recognize Jim King in there. Later on in the vid Joe H. makes a friendly appearance in the GoPro vid.
