It has been said by many this winter, and man I’ll say it again…the ice has been fantastic. Over the past two weekends I have had the chance to get out twice and have not been disappointed by clear black ice.
I spent Sunday on Cranberry Pond in winds around 10 mph with a Kitewing Race 5.5 and hockey skates. Shared the slippery surface with Donny D., Lynn D. a couple ice boats and a bunch of ice fishermen. Beautiful, sunny, a bit above freezing and breezy.
Some stats from my GPS (Strava app):
Travelled a total of 14 miles
Top Speed of 23 mph
Average speed of 13.9 mph
I also got out the Sunday previous thanks to a heads up from Scott Rowe who know a few iceboat guys rigging up on 100 acre pond in Mendon Ponds Park. This day was the first one I tried the Kitewing with skates, and loved it. John Simballo was out there as was a Rick in their iceboats. Scott had an ailing back but took a few iceboat runs and got a video of me actually “jibing” the Kitewing.
When I travel to Kitewing these days I always try to bring an extra full size wing, and a smaller SK8 hand held wing. Come give it a shot.
