I had thought daylight savings time had put my gear away for the season. Getting a session in on a weekday after the time change almost never happens. But leave it to Corey to clue me in on a perfect sundown session opportunity.
Corey D. put ‘daigua on my radar on Sunday night as my body was recovering form a ho hum 7.5 session at Long Pond with Scott. Maybe then. Mid morning I got a text from Corey “It’s ramping, I’m getting butterflies in my stomach.” Yeah, I know that feeling and I had to go for it.
As I neared the soon to be Neon Wave (previously CDGA Sailboarding) shop I spotted Corey already ripping on his 5.5 and smaller board, the sun was still high in the air at 3:30. Scott, Joe and Teddy had scored a Seneca session earlier in the day and I figured we may see Joe stop in on his way home. Sure enough, as I rigged my 5.8 Joe’s truck pulled in and he hopped out with a “hey Rascal”. He put on warmer shoes while I rigged furiously. Corey continued to rip it up solo on the. frothy deep blue water. Scott arrived….STILL WEARING HIS WETSUIT. A brief look together for Scott and Joe, and suddenly we had a crew rigging up for a season ender together as the sun went down (Killington is open….you know who’s windsurfing season is done).
I put my 5.8 on my 95L, Scott rigged his 5.3 instead of his 5.5……yeah, retired pros like to be able to make those little adjustments in sail size…Haaaa! Joe rigged a 48 (4.8 for the layman). Damn it felt good to be out there windsurfing with those guys. Fall’s dull bleakness starting to settle around us, and four colorful sails (and colorful characters) dancing on the waves and lighting the world up. I’ve missed this feeling. Family commitments have kept me from getting out to some sessions, and caution about my banged up shoulder (and an upcoming surgery on it) have had me less motivated than in years past. For an hour we blasted around East side to West side, and side by side mowing over the Canandaigua chop. Yeah, it has been said that going back and forth on relatively flat stuff is just mowing the lawn, but the crew you are with can take it from going back and forth with a push mower to riding on a full on zero turn commercial mower. Yeah!
Every session comes to an end. Joe packed up first and headed home to steak glad that he got wet again today. Nice. Scott and Corey blasted around a little longer than me on their slightly bigger boards, but eventually came off together and we took our gear down together. The stoke was high for all of us. It was an amazing session, and then Corey broke out a few Heady Toppers for us to end things with in the dark at Kershaw. Next level Corey……Oh yeah!!!!! Thank you.
As quickly as the session came together, it ended. The cold, empty beer cans, and a drive home sent us on our way. Scott drove home in his wetsuit. Style points, Scott.
Thankful for my windsurfing family,
Wd

Like I said, that was windsurfing candy! And it was great sailing into the dark with you guys. Slamming gibes at full speed in the flat water by the west end break wall was exhilarating all while the sun was dropping below the hillside. As I sailed I back and forth a quick glance toward shores also revealed a micro brew pub at one end, Young Lion and another at the east end, Twisted Rail! So to finish the session with a legendary Heady Topper NEIPA…well that just putting a cherry on top. Thanks Corey! (note: you have to go to Vermont to guy this stuff it’s not widely distributed!)
Oh, almost forgot. Yes there was another session earlier at Seneca! Teddy, Joe and I sailed overpowered on 4.8-5.5’s in some really great swell. It just kept ramping up til I started missing a bunch of gibes so we called it quits but knew Corey and Doug would be heading to Daigua so session number two was an easy call. Great fun guys.
