Funky day. Car has been in the shop for 2-1/2 weeks (parts availability delays), then I had to go pick it up. And, of course, the work thing (and I’m behind with a big meeting tomorrow). Went past Cornell’s Merrill sailing center a little after mid-day, and there were 3 windsurfers out (including Suan). After picking up my car, I dropped by Myers to see what was going…looked to be about 6.5 down the pike. Went home, checked mail, etc., and then headed out a little before 4 PM.
Arrived at Myers at about 4:15, nobody else there. Wind was ~17-22 on the shore, lulls to 15, scattered squalls on the horizon. The water looked bigger, making it a tough call….I rigged the 6.7.
Before launching, Jeff Bishop showed up (windsurfer turned kiter), and rigged his new 9m. In the meantime, squalls were lining up and the wind getting squirrelly. I went out on the 6.7 and was hugely overpowered in the squall; came in to go to the 5.8, and while I was rigging it the wind died. How many times have I lived this story? Jeff went out, I waited a while. Eventually joined him but it was mostly a schlogg. Managed to get upwind, had a few reaches in the gusts. Eventually came in to go to the 6.7. About then, it started filling in pretty good…ultimately giving us 30-40 minutes of 6.0 wall-to-wall riding in my fave conditions of about 0.5m overpowered.
Eventually rounded up way to the NE, very unfavorable at Myers, so I headed in and Jeff came in shortly behind me.
Myers always serves up a great day now and then, to keep the addiction going.
