Excellent video from Robby on his new foiling setup…very different design than other efforts, which makes a WHOLE lot more sense to me: low aspect / high power delta shaped foil, purpose-designed board that doesn’t require moving back to the straps (allows straight to foiling from the sailing position), purpose-designed low aspect ratio sail (long boom), deeper draft, CoE more aft (for ease of aligning sail to foil CoE without having to move back on the board). Naish windsurf foil boards are wide (73-76 cm), he demos in 6-10 mph wind with a 4.7 (admits he’d rather have the 5.8 in those conditions to avoid having to give monster pumps). Videos himself, shows relevant views of foot position and early planing (basically just jumping onto foiling with minimal low-plane time) and narrates while sailing. If I were to try windsurf foiling, I think I’d be going this route. Lots of wisdom in what he’s put together and saying here, of how to get out in low wind (I note the lack of weeds in his venue…am not sure if there is an effective weed foil?).
I would also note that this is a wind range when you can go out and have a GREAT time with a high-performance longboard, though it’s huge, very technical to ride well, and you’d benefit from at least a 7.5 or bigger.

Just got a free copy of windsurfer magazine (thanks Doug) and it features hydrofoiling windsurfing style. Great article and I am excited about this new sport! First impressions looks like fun, very expensive, worried about weeds, and for sailors in western NY; lighter wind often means more boat traffic. Last year I was nearly taken out by a boat on Seneca that didn’t give right of way. I expect SUP folks know what paddling in traffic is like, expect I’d adapt, we always do. I do think this is the way to extend my windsurfing experience as I get older and my joints that have been beaten up by youthful over exuberance become arthritic and painful. I’m ready! Can I borrow yours!

I had caught this vid by Robby, but had not dug deeper on why his foil is so different. Thanks for the enlightenment. I bookmarked it in my brain in case I ever get a shot on one of these. Maybe let Ken Altfather at Baycreak know that the Naish set up is curiously different and perhaps more atrtractive?
Thanks for posting it Freaky G. Maybe we sail together this year?? Maybe? The late fall Seneca nukers have been missing.
