I love drag racing everybody on the water,  but racing on a course with strategy is a different thing all together.  I’m more of a free ride lover at heart.  If I were to like racing it would be more like a long figure 8 slalom course.

Anyhow, it has actually been pretty exciting to tune in to the RSX racing (and watching the previously recorded stuff) on the internet at nbcolympics.com.  I have copied links to previous races below, each pretty exciting for their own reasons.

The video is totally professional, complete with GPS tracking and illustrations based on the tracking.  Helicopter views, water shots, like the Americas Cup for windsurfing.  One thing that is missing is the Live Commentary..and that is a good thing because all you here is the sound of the water.

      The Men.

The winds were not supposed to be any good in Rio, but the mens race on Monday saw paling conditions and exciting racing.  The Brit ruled.  Our USA representative had a decent finish in a race but sits near the back of the pack.

      The Women.

TUesday saw some women’s races go off after the Finn sailors.  The woman did not have the conditions that the men had the day before, but none the less, they were in the harness, leaning out, and pumping, and seemed to have the boards near planing in in 6-8 kn.  of wind.   It wasn’t really fast, but it was exciting none the less.

The RS-X gear is intriguing.  You may remember that Neil Pryde makes the whole kit.  The board has a unique undercut tail and is a hybrid of a long board and formula board.  It is making the conditions seem fun.  Lots of foot straps, a huge fin and daggerboard.  The sail is cambered, and features adjustable outhaul, AND adjustable downhaul.  The boom and mast are carbon.  So this set up is pricey and not attainable for anybody really.  The price on the NP website is in Euros, and I got mixed up converting that to Canadian, the Brit Pounds and US Dollars.  Forgot to carry a 1 I think.  Not seriously.
