The Day: Tuesday
The Lakes: Eastern Lake O looks best today, but don’t rule out Eastern Lake E.
The Set-Up: Low pressure over Quebec and Newfoundland coupled with high pressure over Minnesota gives us a pretty nice pressure gradient over Lakes E and O….6+mbar. The cold front has passed thru our region as the low pressure shifted east overnight, so we will feel much less heat today.
The Wind: The greatest wind magnitude appears to be the southern shore of Lake Ontario from Rochester to Oswego, with WNW wind peaking 20-25mph between 2-8pm. This is likely where I will be heading. However, if you live in Buffalo and don’t have time to drive that far, keep an eye on eastern Lake Erie meters. While nearly every model is showing WNW direction in Buffalo we may possibly see wind backing to W or even WSW at our beaches on the open lake with possible magnitudes of 15-20mph.
The Conclusion: We have hope from the wind drought.

We had so much fun sailing with you guys today in Rochester. What a great spot you have there! Thank you so much for sharing it with us. Today totally saved the month of July from the wind drought.

A heck of a great day on the water! When I arrived around noon, Art was on his wind foil, and Scott was slogging on a 7.5. When I left, with wind a sailors still on the water, my 5.2 and 95L was still working.
I have sailed more with Bill and Keith already this year than all of last year. Scott and Art were the early birds of course…the wind sets its alarm clock by those guys (not counting some of the kite guys that always seem to get a session when its windy…they were at Montana). Nick A. was ready for the wind to amp up with his 14m rigged and ready.
The wind quickly built from marginal to “I’m going 6.5 cause 7.5 looks to be lighting Scott’s butt on fire”, in minutes. My 6.5 lasted 20 minutes of ripping before I was sure I could go down to a 5.8 and smaller board. That lasted until I was sure the 5.8 was entirely too much, and I went down to 5.2.
The cool surprise of the day was Eric, Lisa and family making the reverse Buffalo drive and coming to Rochester. These guys are clearly ready to travel for wind…maybe that’s why Durand delivered. Eric Rigged up a 4.7 and planed off the beach while Lisa waffled on 4.2 or 3.7. 4.2 or 3.7!!!!???? She ended up on the 4.2 and joined Eric and the crew. Eric seems to be getting his duck jibes pretty dialed in, and that motivated me (initially why I switched form 6. to a 5.8…easier to duck) to go for it. Some spectacular launches followed until I got a better feel for the speed and timing, but again I managed to pull off two ducks jibes on my 5.8 and 95L. After all these years of trying to perfect the carve jibe, it doesn’t feel natural to do something else, but it’s coming along.
Everybody was ripping, the stoke was palpable. I want to believe that Keith being back in the mix, and Bill finding time in his schedule, Nick coming up from Bristol, and Eric and Lisa willed this day to happen.

I think that was the best day of the entire season for me. Everything was perfect! The water was warm, sun bright, sky was blue, the beach was beautiful, the friends were terrific, and my wife and kids were with me which made it so awesome. My 4.7m did not last long as it ramped up, so I went in and rigged the 3.7m for Lisa and I took her 4.2m. Then it came up a little more and I was able to get some rides on the 3.7m myself while Lisa took a break. Wish I would have seen your duck jibes Doug. Saw a couple nice jumps that you did. And Lisa launched a nice jump that I got to see too. The 4 of us ended the day at that Irish restaurant near Seabreeze.
