I’m the guy who talked to you on the phone yesterday. I’m no expert windsurfer either, but have following comments:
I highly recommend a trip to Outer Banks or Florida – where you can get some instruction and rent equipment. Your sailing experience will come in handy, but the instruction is well worth shortening the learning curve. With windsurfing you don’t want to learn by osmosis. I did that and wish I could do that part of my life over again. Most places that offer instruction also have good rental options, which will give you the chance to try newer, correctly sized equipment. You will get a much better idea what boards/sails/etc are best for you.
Besides above two benefits, such a trip would take you to warmer waters enabling you to get a start on learning much earlier than if restricted just to the Northeast. So find a way to do this in spite of virus/pandemic! Let us know if you would like suggestions where to go.
Notwithstanding above advice, I have an old but good raceboard kit that I started on, looking to unload it. Fanatic Ultracat with rig. There are better more modern choices for beginner equipment, but for little money would get you started. On lighter wind days you’d likely be targeting to get out there and practice, this rig is very effective. I’m not trying to push it on you, but if you don’t otherwise find a good learning kit this would be an inexpensive option to get going.
I also have a Mistral Synchro – for me was excellent choice for first shortboard. I got it from one of the guys on this site for very reasonable price, willing to pass it on for even more reasonable $. Not a good idea though until you’ve tested some rental equipment, had some time on the water, and so on. Guessing you’re a quick learner, so maybe by summertime. You’re welcome to try it anytime.
