  • Dang. More summer doldrums as a high is sitting on top of us today and tomorrow. Weak front comes on Sunday, but likely only bringing light winds (~10 kts). Nothing from Presque Isle all the way to the St Lawrence Seaway.

SAT: the dreaded “L&V” (light and variable)

SUN: SW to W at 5-10…could get very lucky with a thermal, but otherwise not…[Read more]

  • Actually, I’m gettin’ old and am but a shell of my former being. But the spirit of the marathoner lives on, and can get me in over my head…

Back in 1999 (I think), I joined my stepfather and several friends/family for a stag sailboat race, known as “the Niddle”, up on the St Lawrence. It was always the weekend after Memorial Day. We’d sailed it…[Read more]

  • Arrived at Seneca SP this morning hoping to find moderate winds, but it was only light-to-moderate. I’d brought the Mega Cat for just such a reason, so rigged the 7.5 and set out on a nice light breeze and sunny day. Wind was SSE at 10 (mostly) to 15 in the gusts. Decided to head up to the HWS meteorological buoy, so put the centerboard down and…[Read more]

  • Looks like a good summer weekend for the Finger Lakes…

SAT: mid-teens, foul weather later in the day so get there early. Possible setup for Seneca AM boost with cool clear night and S breeze. If so, the best wind will be 09:00-11:00.

SUN: mid-to-upper teens, gusts higher, foul weather late in the day so, again, get there early.

    Would like to…[Read more]

  • Middle of the summer doldrum season, so anything we get now is a bonus. But we do have a front coming through, only question is how wet it will be. Both days looking SW gradually rounding to W in most of our area.

SAT: FX is for thunderstorms all day Sat, everywhere, so it’ll just be hit and miss as to whether or not it is OK for riding. Those…[Read more]

  • Q1: what is the green and orange one…looking so fancy?

Q2: is the foil in picture 2 the same as in picture 1? The one mounted on the board looks raked, whereas the one on the ground looks orthogonal.

  • Wow! This is the earliest in August in which I recall getting a present from the Wind Gods.

Lovely day today for a few of us who got to Seneca before mid-afternoon. Was it classic gnarly Seneca going off? No, but I would say that today is the kind of day that launched the windsurfing boom of the 80s – 90ºF, sunny, wind 14-18 in solid 7.0, warm…[Read more]

  • Beautiful evening at Lodi Point today, mild moderately powered-up 7.5 conditions from 4:30-6 PM, sunny, warm water, nice for a mid-summer day. Lodi Point is definitely an under-rated spot – definitely a go-to spot on a NNW to NNE.

The weekend is hard to call; mixed forecasts because we have a weak nor’easter for the weekend. Typically, Erie is…[Read more]

  • Gotta have a wifi network to put them on, so any local spot would have to have a RWS-friendly host that would allow the sensors on their network. If that were a public network, it shouldn’t be a problem, but if a secure network I would think the host would have some concerns about how secure these things are. I mean, if geeks can hi-jack your…[Read more]

  • It’s looking like climate change may turn NY into CA – no rain, everything turns brown and afternoon thermal breezes.

    SAT

Looks like Westerlies on the Big O, with a predictable rounding up to N’Westerlies for the Finger Lakes (the normal trend south of Ontario). Oneida gets Westerlies…only problem is that Sylvan Beach gets taken over by ICE…[Read more]

  • Summer doldrums time. Best wind was probably the last 3 afternoons, mostly was W. Decent S-SW on Wednesday before the front hit…presumably somebody got some time in before the rain came (not me).

Oh, I forgot, this is a forecast

Saturday: Not showing much anywhere, though the NWS graphical fx suggests the FLX will get NW-erlies in the…[Read more]

  • Definitely mid-summer conditions now. So be ready for afternoon thermals on sunny days. Coming back from Indiana on Tuesday, seemed to be having a mild thermal effect in Erie, PA as I went through. Tempting to go see the lake, but as it is a 12 hour drive, I didn’t go look. But the trees along the highway were blowing.

Saturday – only real bet…[Read more]

  • Sat: L&V. Low but non-zero chance of light S breeze on Seneca in the early AM. Wouldn’t drive for it, but if you’re there be ready. If it happens, it’ll be over by 11 AM.

Sun: Brad looks to get his wish for mid-teen S winds on Seneca, good moments may reach 20.

I’m headed out today for a trip to Indiana, so no 4th of July Fx next week. Good luck…[Read more]

  • And so the disappointing Spring seems to be ending as we approach the Summer Solstice, and we enter a more summer-like pattern. High pressure system this weekend will deliver L&V kinds of wind, but may set up a couple of kinds of thermals to keep in mind:

    1) Big Lake afternoon thermals on sunny days, and

    2) Seneca Lake AM “Inverse” thermal on…[Read more]

  • Well, the stormy part on Sat went by early and it turned out to be a good day with a moderate-to-strong W wind. Warm, sunny, great day for Erie, Ontario, Oneida. Alas, on Friday I found out about an RFP that I really have to send in an application on behalf of a client, and it’s due next Friday. End of windy weekend…

After writing all day Sat,…[Read more]

  • Not hard to Fx this weekend.

SAT – stormy, possibly violent. If you’re young enough (of whatever age) that you can’t get enough, go for it but watch out for lightning and hail. Likely the kind of day that could turn you into a statistic, so be cautious.

SUN – Big and bigger, NW, everywhere in our area. Go to the best convenient spot.

    Enjoy!

  • Funky day. Car has been in the shop for 2-1/2 weeks (parts availability delays), then I had to go pick it up. And, of course, the work thing (and I’m behind with a big meeting tomorrow). Went past Cornell’s Merrill sailing center a little after mid-day, and there were 3 windsurfers out (including Suan). After picking up my car, I dropped by Myers…[Read more]

  • Oh, sorry Doug. Hate it when I get skunked like that. Hopefully you can get some of today’s wind…it’s not a great direction for Ithaca.

  • Problem with days when it goes off early and then gets still or stormy, is that for those of us who don’t live near the spot you’ve got to get up and outta there in order to get any TOW. So it was today…I woke up, having gone to bed exhausted and still not recovered from travel and a week of 0600-2230 days at a conference in Boston. But the HWS…[Read more]
