Sorry Doug I figured one awesome kitewing article a week was enough, besides not sure how much traction my ice boat action will get. Since I can’t seem to convert anyone on this site!!
My friend Dave, fed me the intel on the black ice on Keuka. Later he showed me the pic he’d received and it was a crack free image of pure blackness. In fact as he…[Read more]

Dramatic Kitewing Rescue in Penfield
First let me say that all is well. No one drown or was injured except for a minor burn on my forearm.
After a lackluster day with my 5.5 Kitewing on Irondequoit Bay I drove to my home in Penfield. Once in the driveway. I decided to investigate an engine code that had recently greeted me on the dashboard of my…[Read more]

So hard to get motivated with the deary weather we’ve been experiencing but I kept my gear accessible and it paid off with a decent session at Canandaigua Lake.
The forecast showed the wind falling off hard by late morning so I tried to get up early but failed miserably in that department. As I left Rochester the sun was coming out and I hoped…[Read more]

I should have described this pic better, and sorry about the hijacked thread; this was during the early Windsurfer one design racing period, late 70’s to early 80’s. This shot was taken at the award ceremony at Cuba Lake and Genessee sponsored a number of races back then. Jeremy, I remember him. Steve Luter and his girlfriend/wife Sheri? were part…[Read more]

Fall Foil-age, A Shark Tail
The coldest weather of the Fall season accompanied a persistent late night and morning rain. The cold west winds that brought it here give the windsurfing community a bit of angst as suitable launches are next to nil. But there is a new game in town and its called foiling. Local kite surfers have been foiling for years…[Read more]

The Rochester boys scored a nice sailing session on good ole Lake O at Durand Beach. Winds had west in it and a noticeable wind shadow was evident. Initial reaction was that it just wasn’t that windy looking from shore even though the I Bay meter was showing solid 18-21 mph wind! Art and I were the first to arrive hoping to get a good foil session…[Read more]

Sometimes it good to get lucky! But was it luck? You had your gear and you were there! Nice!

Nice write up. Didn’t want to read it because I missed it. Well sort of…I was hiding from the wind in my canoe in the ADK!
For fun here’s a pic from the old days…I thought Frank was in it but maybe he remembers these folks from the 80’s. Sponsored by Genesee Beer!

The ninety degree days were wearing me down! Couldn’t wait to see what the cold front would bring. All eyes were on Lake Ontario and even the weathermen got this one right. 20-30 N/NW winds. The local news reported that the holiday festivities at Durand Beach were devastating to the environment due to litter from party goers, five tons of refuse…[Read more]

Love to have you guys! Its near to Charlotte or Seabreeze where there are nice places to eat and drink! Or there are BBQ grills for picnicking. Also, a stones throw from launch is a public beach with life guard for the kids. This beach is quite long so if you get in trouble (that never happens!) you still wash ashore on a beach. But its no Lake…[Read more]

Of course as soon as I write this I get an email that says “your foil has been shipped”! I have to laugh though as the email states that “there are no assemble instructions includes so do this this and this…”. I mean like they didn’t have enough time to write up instruction even though it took two months to deliver! Only the medium size screw…[Read more]

Compare that to what they do for us at Seneca Park! Sailors paradise! Or Durand Beach where they rake the sandy launch for us! Thanks for checking it out. We need to check out East Bay sometime and see if it still accessible after last years erosion problem. Great in a west wind.

As I type this report my fingers are swollen and still ache from the last two days of sailing. Wednesday the gang had a blistering day at Long Pond but yesterday the winds clocked and we had a wicked day at Durand Beach on Lake Ontario!
Arriving at the beach with the fresh scent of asphalt still lingering on the nasal synapses I glance out on the…[Read more]

A great way to revisit a super session with a blow by blow record! I still can’t believe how upwind you got on this trace with the geographic features just out of view to the right. I like it but can’t afford it!

Also, what Doug said earlier, lots of used gear floating around which is how most of us accumulate gear. My garage is a museum of vintage gear and such.

A lot of us use IWindsurf app which is subscription based app. I think there is a free version but don’t remember what data is available. Also, there is a group message board where people, kiters and windsurfers post where the action is. Primarily we windsurf three sites in or near Rochester; Long Pond in a WSW wind, Durand Beach on Lake Ontario…[Read more]
