A community in the wind
This winter has been good for getting ice sessions, but you’ve had to be in the know to Kitewing, Freeskate, or Kite where the ice was known to be safe. Scott scouted out a launch near Sutter’s Marina on I Bay, and it has been good for 5 sessions of wide open good ice. In this gallery is 13 year old Owen getting his first rides on the blue and yellow Kitewing SK8. Gary and Scott ripping as well.
Donny D. shared this vid. History here connects to the old Tug Hill Snow Kite Rally. When that event could not be scheduled any longer its place was taken by this cool event. Sacandaga Lake is a three hour drive east from Rochester, and worth a future look. Don has been going for years and has had a great time. As in years past we will convene an afternoon meeting of the local/regional wind sport enthusiasts and get reconnected for the upcoming season. The 2019 Rochester Windsports Hook In, and Hang Out will again be at Mulconry’s Irish Pub in Fairport. All are welcome.
Highlights include local vids on the big screen, wings and finger food, raffle, possible used gear for sale.
If you’ve done some winter riding, come talk about it. If you’ve gotten on the water already, come talk about it. If you’re just getting after life, come talk about it! Bring used gear you may want to sell, bring your curiosity, and this year again BRING YOUR SPOUSE/SIGNIFICANT OTHER (if you dare!).

If you ride a Kitewing, or ice Kite, or freeskate, or ice boat this video is a must see. The ice is incredible. The riding and footage is incredible. Best of all, it was filmed on December 9, 2018! Forecasters are calling for a deep freeze to begin in late December and continue through March. I’m in! RWS has a demo Kitewing if you get the itch. You provide the skates or skis.
